  • The driving age in NJ is 17. The state of NJ has an “early bird route” that allows a student driver, at the age of 16, to drive with supervision only after they receive a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction with a NJ state-certified driving school.

  • The state of NJ has mandated a minimum of at least 6 hours behind the wheel training program to be eligible to receive a learner’s permit for any person that is at least 16 years of age, and less than 17 years of age.

The 6-hour behind-the-wheel training provides a foundation for students to prepare them to begin supervised practice driving with their parent or guardian. For many students, this is simply not enough time. If this is the case, we offer additional lessons as seen in our A La Carte Service.

  • If your child is 17 or older, you can purchase a permit by making an appointment at njmvc.gov. However, for drivers who are 16 years of age, it is required to apply for a permit through a licensed driving school.

  • Yes. All of our vehicles have a dual brake system, allowing the instructor to stop the car if (or when) necessary. This is required by the state of NJ.

  • Yes, you can, with some stipulation. It is not required that a driving school take your child to the road test; however, you MUST have an emergency brake accessible to the passenger seat. Additionally, students under the age of 21 must have red decals on front and back of the vehicle they test with.

If you do not have a suitable vehicle, or if you would like to have New Life Driving School take your student driver to the test, we are happy to provide you with current pricing for this service and to get you on our schedule. Please feel free to contact us at 201-689-1999 or email us at newlifedrs@gmail.com.

  • You may schedule an appointment for the NJ Road Test six months after having your permit, or after the student’s 17th birthday, whichever comes later. The road test must be scheduled and passed before the written test/permit expires.

  • Every new driver must pass the written knowledge test (NJ Permit Test), but not all schools offer them. We proctor the knowledge test at our office. See our resource page for practice exams.

  • Yes. Any new driver younger than 21 years old is required to complete the New Jersey MVC GDL program. For more information, please visit http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/index.html to view the full GDL guidelines and restrictions.
